tal levels. He spends time showing that there are competing global health and economic agendas and programs at work. He describes a shift in focus to new technologies in malaria treatment, as drug resistance moved to the forefront of the agenda; this which has led to the production of novel drugs. Kamat shows that local populations are caught in the middle of a confusing process of “frontline” treatment changes as policy and economics collide. This collision results in many different drug options produced in various places around the globe and, depending on whether or not the particular drug is subsidized by the government, a wide range of prices. Similar to other ethnographies that investigate the relationships among longterm consequences of structural adjustment programs, struggling health systems, and increasing privatization for the poor, Kamat concludes the book in Chapter 9 and in a two-page epilogue (Chapter 10) by clearly stating that technological and pharmaceutical fixes are not likely to solve problems stemming from structural inequities. I have no reservations about including this ethnography in a medical anthropology, global health, or biocultural anthropology course. It is a perfect complement to a section focusing on infectious or zoonotic diseases and can be presented alongside the evolutionary history, biology, genetics, and epidemiology of malaria. My only critique is that there is a slight overuse of Swahili words, which to a non-Swahili speaker may make the read a bit challenging at times. That said, this ethnography is still highly accessible. It is well written and would work well at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Using this book in a biocultural anthropology course would provide an opportunity for students to work through how biology, culture, and economics intersect to produce global health outcomes and health disparities. In sum, Kamat positions the health-seeking decisions of mothers in the context of underfunded healthcare systems, the pharmaceuticals industry, and current neoliberal and health policy agendas to bring into relief the realities of the macro–micro interface.

Book Review: Evolution in Four Dimensions by Eva Jablonka and Marion J. Lamb
The subtitle of the book is Genetic, Epigenetic, Behavioral, and Symbolic Variation in the History of Life; thus, the four dimensions of the title. ‘‘The challenge [this book] offers is not to Darwin’s theory of evolution through natural se lection, but to the prevalent gene-based unidimensional ver sion of it.’’ The audience to which the book is directed is revealed in the Preface in the fol...
متن کاملPrécis of Evolution in Four Dimensions.
In his theory of evolution, Darwin recognized that the conditions of life play a role in the generation of hereditary variations, as well as in their selection. However, as evolutionary theory was developed further, heredity became identified with genetics, and variation was seen in terms of combinations of randomly generated gene mutations. We argue that this view is now changing, because it i...
متن کاملEvolution in Four Dimensions : Genetic , Epigenetic , Behavioral , and Symbolic Variation in the History of Life
In The Origin of Species, published in 1859, Charles Darwin described evolution as a process subject to diverse influences. Natural selection, of course, leads to adaptation in a manner similar to the changes elicited by breeders of pets or livestock. However, organisms might also display neutral characteristics, which have no effect on their fitness. In addition, and rather surprisingly for th...
متن کاملWeismann Rules! OK? Epigenetics and the Lamarckian temptation
August Weismann rejected the inheritance of acquired characters on the grounds that changes to the soma cannot produce the kind of changes to the germ-plasm that would result in the altered character being transmitted to subsequent generations. His intended distinction, between germ-plasm and soma, was closer to the modern distinction between genotype and phenotype than to the modern distinctio...
متن کاملSequence Variations of Mitochondrial DNA Displacement-Loop in Iranian Indigenous Sheep Breeds
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has been used extensively to study population genetics because it has the unique features of maternal inheritance, a relatively fast rate of evolution and lack of recombination. A total of 82 unrelated sheep from 10 Iranian indigenous sheep breeds were investigated to determinate the maternal genetic diversity using a sequence of a 685 bp segment of the displacement lo...
